Communication lessons we can learn from the HPB’s tweet bleep

I was quoted by The Straits Times today on Singapore Health Promotion Board’s tweet bleep.  You can read the full article here (Subscription needed). There are some communications lessons we can learn about this incident. However, before we go there, there is a need to highlight that Twitter still serve an important news channel to today’s digital generation. The reason why some followers tweeted negatively about the incident because of the perceptions that we have of governments, squeakily clean and polite, which some of you might disagree. As such, if you are handling a government or even a brand Twitter account, be sure what you say to the public is what you want the public to hear. In this case, it was a technology snafu but the reaction was quite predictable. Separation of State and Church This bleep in the tweet was probably the result of somebody forgetting to switch account from HPB’s to a personal one. Singapore’s Health Promotion Board “tweets” the four-letter bad word

Followers of the Health Promotion Board ( HPBSG ) Twitter’s account were appalled when they saw the four-letter bad word appearing in the Singapore government agency’s tweet stream. According to the followers, the offending tweet went something like this - “Fuck u lah, u same level as me can dont talk to me like tt?”. The tweet has since been removed and handlers for HPBSG have started apologising to followers. According to a search on the hashtag #HPBSG, the offending tweet was meant for the friend of the person handling the HPBSG Twitter account. A mix up between the personal account and the HPB account might have resulting in the offending tweet. Lesson of the day: Be nice on Twitter especially if you are responsible for multiple Twitter accounts.

“I know who you are but I don’t know who is that tall handsome dude?”

The Singapore journalists Facebook grapevine tells of a story of a young PR girl who called a IT journalist pitching for a story. The IT journalist was too busy for the girl and told her to call his deputy editor. The poor PR girl replied she didn’t know his deputy editor was and asked for the IT journalist to provide for his name and email address. IT journalist was rather pissed off of the PR girl lack of knowledge of the industry who’s who. Lesson learn here that if you are in PR, at least have the heart to read through the entire publication to know the names of the people writing for it. Even if you don’t know who the person is, surely somebody in your agency should know. Ask them, not the journalist.
