When a Samsung photo is not a Samsung photo says the EXIF data

All digital photos have a hidden watermark embedded in it called the EXIF data. This EXIF data would usually details of how the photo was taken and with what camera. Samsung, or rather their agency, posted a photo claiming to be theirs and taken with a Samsung camera. However, the photographer came across his photo and showed that this photo was taken with, not a Samsung camera, but with a Nikon. Image from EDMW Facebook Page Wrote CNET Asia,   Samsung claimed that the image was taken by one of its photographers and was using the image to promote a contest to win its latest NX300 ILC. However, the EXIF data of the original image found on Santos' Web site showed that it was taken with a Nikon D700, refuting the implication that the image posted on the Facebook page was taken with a Samsung camera (presumably the NX300). Samsung has since apologised to the photographer before generating 180 comments about Samsung's unauthorise use of the photo. If Sams...

Singapore Press Holidings' tussle with former radio personality puts spotlight back on copyrights

Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) , the publisher for The Straits Times, issued Daniel Ong, a former radio personality in Singapore, a bill of $749 for republishing an article about his venture into the F&B businesses. Wrote  Daniel Ong , "We get an email stating that we need to pay SPH $535.00 per story about Jaime(my superstar wifey) and our Successful business Twelve cupcakes. In total about 30,000 people we reach out to...on FB and twitter(maybe lotsa duplicates).. " Supporters of Daniel Ong have claimed SPH for being greedy to ask for an interviewee for payment to republish the entire article. It is also rather disappointing that some communication professionals are putting down SPH's...

Yahoo! SEA files defence, counter claim SPH for copyright infringement on STOMP!

Yahoo! SEA has filed it defence against Singapore Press Holdings (SPH)  copyright infringement suit  and has also counter claimed that SPH reproduced Yahoo! content on STOMP without permission. Wrote Yahoo! SEA , In its defence, Yahoo! SEA highlighted the fundamental principle that copyright law does not protect facts and information and that the public has the right to be informed of news and current events in Singapore.    The internet company also filed a counterclaim which alleges that on at least two known occasions over the last year, SPH had itself substantially reproduced Yahoo! content on its citizen-journalism site STOMP. I expected STOMP to bring trouble to SPH one day.

Travel agency promotes Seoul market as destination in Japan (‘cause photo used without blogger’s permission)

(Update 25 August 2011 - 1125am: Chan Brothers have apologised, via email, to Daniel Goh and has since taken the photo off from their website and Facebook Page.) A blogger discovered that one of his travel photos have been used without permission by a travel agency to promote a destination in Japan. The biggest irony - the photo used was taken at a wet market in Seoul, Korea. Blogger Daniel Goh discovered that one of travel photos was being used by Chan Brothers to promote a wet market in Japan but he was not approached by the travel agency that his photo will be used to promote their “7D Perfectly Delicious Hakkaido with Celebrity Chef Eric Teo”. The only problem was that the photo was shot at Noryangjin Fish Market in Korea. Daniel Goh’s photo in Flickr. Photo used at Chan Brother’s Facebook Page. The two men walking down the market is clear evidence that the photo was taken off Daniel Goh’s Flickr account. A comment on Daniel Goh’s Facebook  photo highlig...
