#SG50ShadesOfGrey - The Dark Humourous Side Of Singapore

If you think Singaporeans are straight faced and can't make a joke, guess again. Singapore Twitterers have launch their own #SG50ShadesOfGrey hashtag. What has made this hashtag ironic was that Singapore is also celebrating its 50th anniversary with the SG50 slogan. 50 Shades of Grey have given the perfect comic relief  to those who have been jaded with SG50 celebrations though we are only into only the second month of 2015. Here are some of my contributions. She tried to breath but gagged. The strong haze in Feb affected her tremendously. #sg50shadesofgrey — socialpr (@socialpr) February 16, 2015 "Sir! Whip me. Hard." scream the school bully as the discipline master prepared his public caning for stealing. #sg50shadesofgrey — socialpr (@socialpr) February 16, 2015 She torn it open n it was huge. But she can only see but cannot touch. She sighed as she tossed away her CPF statement. #SG50ShadesOfGrey — socialpr (@socialpr) February 16, 2015 Here are ...

Social Lessons From KLM Tweet

It was meant as a cheeky tweet from Dutch airlines, KLM, but it ended up pissing almost the whole world. So what went? KLM tweeted "Aidos Amigos!" #NEDMEX" with reference to the lost by Mexico to Dutch. Sounds innocent, but the whole world found it be "racist". Wrote The Guardian , The Hollywood actor Gael García Bernal launched a foul-mouthed Twitter attack on KLM after the airline posted a tweet mocking Mexico and their defeat to Holland. The A-list star wrote: “I’m never flying your shitty airline again. F--- you big time,” after the Dutch airline posted a picture and an infographic of a sombrero, moustache and serape blanket under the heading “Adios Amigos!”. So why did KLM drew so much ire? 1. Be Humble In Victory and Gracious In Defeat  Most sportspeople would have learn that those who are humble in victory and gracious in defeat are the best sportspeople around. KLM, while trying to celebrate Dutch victory, sounded arrogant in bragging ...

Singapore Acting Manpower Minister probably didn't get the Health Rivalry memo from his Health Ministry counterpart

Singapore Health Promotion Board (HPB) is currently running a campaign to get Singaporeans to start on a health rivalry with each other.  However, a Tweeter conversation between HPB and the acting minister for Manpower probably highlighted that the latter did not get the memo from HPB.  When asked again if the Minister had taken the HPB healthy lifestyle index, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin said nope.  The conversation ended there without any commitment from Mr Tan to take the HPB healthy lifestyle index. Then again, it was the long Easter weekend and Mr Tan could take the healthy lifestyle index over the weekend.  Or as they say, "There is always tomorrow".

To those wanting a job in Social Media – Stop typing out vulgarities to friends

If you are into social media or want to be into social media, the first thing you ought to do is to stop typing out vulgarities to your friends on any social media outlets. Last March, one social media executive at Health Promotion Board tweeted the f-bomb, which was meant for friends, on the HPB account . On April’s Fool 2011, a social media executive at The Straits Times tweeted the f-bomb, which was also meant for friends, on The Straits Times twitter account – Stcom . Look at both incidents. Both were meant for friends. But because of a mix up in account on the Twitter client, the two behind both accounts send out the f-bomb through these official Twitter accounts. Many have said that the four letter word is something you say commonly to friends and friends take it in jest. However, if the f-bomb comes from an official account, it affects the reputation of the brand. The social media editor for STcom has apologise for the error. Wrote The Straits Times , Upon being ...

Indonesia leads again – this time in Twitter!

It seems that Indonesia is the Social Network capital of Asia when it comes to the game of numbers. Sysomos reported that Indonesia has the highest number of twitter users (2.41% of twitter users) and Indonesian tweeters contributed 2.34% of tweets from October 2009 to November 2009. In my post yesterday, Indonesia had the highest number of Facebook users in Asia as of December 2009. From jonrussell.posterous.com , While Thailand does not feature in either list Southeast Asian neighbours Indonesia (6th with 2.41%) and Philippines (15th with 1.08%) are included in the top 20 countries based on share of Twitter users. Analysing Twitter activity and each, Indonesia is 6th (with 2.34% of the world’s tweets), Singapore is 12th (with 0.88%), Philippines is 13th (with 0.85%) and Malaysia 18th (with 0.47%), Thailand fails to make the top 10. Finally Sysomos looked at individual cities and their share of users and activity. Jakarta is the sole Southeast Asian representative...

Supermodels go a Tweeting

They reportedly “ hijacked ” Singapore’s first every Tweetup but can these models of Supermodelme.tv really tweet? I wonder if tweeting contributes to the scores but let me start with the models who need improving and those who are have nailed the tweeting game. Let me start off with the bottom 3 and finish up with the top 3 Supermodel tweeters. The model contestant who needs to improve greatly on her tweeting skill is Kathlene.   As of drafting this post, @Kathlene_SMM only had 5 tweets and a total of 24 words.   Kathlene isn’t a good follower either and she has a following-follower ratio of 0.58. Her only reply is to @Christabel_SMM about Christabel’s snoring that has affected her sleep. Wonder if the lack of sleep is causing her lack of tweets? Second to bottom of the Twitter list is @Anna_SMM . 7 updates and no replies yet. We know she misses home and her mom so far, and I bet her next few tweets are about missing her bed, her cat, her room.. She ha...

Traditional Media Spamming Twitter?

Traditional media are jumping onto the Twitter bandwagon by creating a Twitter account and updating it via their RSS feeds. However, traditional media could be flouting Twitter’s rule on spam and could be ban from the site accordingly. From Twitter , *Spam: You may not use the Twitter service for the purpose of spamming anyone. What constitutes “spamming” will evolve as we respond to new tricks and tactics by spammers. Some of the factors that we take into account when determining what conduct is considered to be spamming are: If you have followed a large amount of users in a short amount of time; If you have a small number of followers compared to the amount of people you are following; If your updates consist mainly of links, and not personal updates; If a large number of people are blocking you; The number of spam complaints that have been filed against you; If you post duplicate content over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate upd...

What good is a micro-blog? Reasons to use Twitter.

(Addendum: You can now get alerted on the latest trailers on Apple at http://twitter.com/itunestrailers/ ) "Radio DJ announces on air that she 'understands' Twitter, and finds it stupid anyway. Methinks she's the stupid one.” Tweeted Sparklette, aka Veron . I can’t comment much on this statement as I did not hear of it but here are some reasons why you should use Twitter. 1. Get breaking news! Many online media organisations are using Twitter to break their news. Some examples include ChannelNews Asia ( http://twitter.com/ChannelNewsAsia ), B2B IT online site ZDNET ASIA ( http://twitter.com/zdnetasia ) and Interactive Marketing magazine ( http://twitter.com/MarketingEds ). 2. Follow your peers No man is an island and Twitter allows you to reach out beyond your circle friends. You can look for peers in your same field of interest on a global level. I visit http://justtweetit.com/ to look for fellow tweeters with similar interests. You can click on their...

Why the Twitter #tag brigade is important to PR and marketing!

Two events in the past week, barcampsg3 and blogout!09, saw a new trend in communications at events emerging that could be things to come for events targeted at bloggers – The Twitter #tag brigade. Twitter is a site for microblogging under 140 characters per post. It works well for events as it allow attendees to post their thoughts or report on the event instantly and share it with their followers. Twitter also allows for communication between attendees and speakers who are also tweeting on the same event. #tag or hashtags is an adaption from mIRC days where you type in join #channel to join the channel. In Twitter, #tag helps to group the conversation of the event or topic and makes it easier to search on search.twitter.com. Web applications like twitterfall.com and monitter.com makes it easier to group #tag tweets to make it seem that a “live” conversation is taking place.   Why is this new trend significant? 170 tweets for #barcampsg3 on event day   ...

Do you have the right Twitter followers?

Found this Twitter app called Twittersheep from Daryl Tay of UniqueFreqency.com . The value of this site is that it helps determine if you have right followers looking at your tweets. Since you are most likely to follow your followers, this tag cloud is also a good indication if you are following people of your interest. The above is the tag cloud from my Twitter account and it shows that I do have the right followers. I don’t find it shocking but it is nice to see “dad”, “father” and husband as part of the tag clouds. Technorati Tags: Twitter , Social PR , Social Media

Top 20 .sg Websites of Alexa’s top 1 million sites

I was going through some Tweets and saw this interesting Twit from techxav, who is Singapore’s Top Twitter based on the number followers. The list is interesting as it highlight the popular sites in the Internet universe and it gives online marketers some figures on website’s to advertise. It is interesting to see the top 1 million sites based on Alexa’s ranking as I usually use that to see an estimation of the stats of bloggers I looking to invite for events. Below is the top 20.sg sites based on Alexa’s ranking. Interesting ebay.com.sg ranks as number 2 at 3115 against 1,000,000. 496 google.com.sg 3115 ebay.com.sg 5484 nus.edu.sg 5843 singaporepools.com.sg 6257 hardwarezone.com.sg 7763 singnet.com.sg 9309 jobsdb.com.sg 9735 ntu.edu.sg 12347 stom...

Dell makes USD1million from Twitter – Here’s how to start!

Dell shook the PC market with its direct to customer strategy plus innovative inventory management system. I was once told that that Dell had more finance people in Penang rather than assembly people because when you make a payment online, Dell has a lead time to use your money when you credit payment immediately. I am not sure how true this is, but it does make sense (pardon the pun). Dell in December 2008 made headlines again when it announced that it made USD1million via Twitter. You could say USD1million isn’t made, but Twitter is free and that means a 1,000,000% profit. Wrote Internet News , “Dell (NASDAQ: DELL) says Twitter has produced $1 million in revenue over the past year and a half through sale alerts. “People who sign up to follow Dell on Twitter receive messages when discounted products are available the company's Home Outlet Store. “They can click over to purchase the product or forward the information to others.” So how can you sell on Twitter? Here’s so...

To kill a mocking blog – a Twitter whodunit

(Update: It seems there are only 2,137 Singapore twitters from a statement in Twitterholic.com ) The Straits Times today reported that blogging is passé and that microblogging is the new Internet rage. From reading the article, it seem that the stats do show that the while visits to blog sites have slowed, the numbers of visitors to Twitter and Plurk has exploded. Tan Weizhen , for The Straits Times, wrote “According to research firm Hitwise, blogging traffic slowed last year, while the usage of Twitter and Plurk has exploded. “The number of Singaporean users visiting and using Twitter 's site jumped 602 per cent between January last year and last month, said Hitwise, which does not reveal absolute figures.” So is blogging so yesterday? I disagree. Its like saying because SMS growth has exploded compared to voice-calls, is voice-call dated? Or saying that there is a jump in growth in visits to online media hence print media is dated? A check at Hitwise paint a...
